Buzz and Reviews
Where East Eats West is a bible on the basics of what it takes to start up and operate a business in China. It is written by Sam Goodman, who writes from the exact perspective you would want and from the exact perspective from which he came: that of an entrepreneur who has "been there and done that" with his own China-based businesses. This snappy book makes for a quick and illuminating read. If you want advice on business in China, this is THE book to which you MUST turn.

I finished the book in two days, and wanted to say this:
1) This is one of the best China business books I have read.
2) Unlike other books written by journalists about big corporations in China, this book is written by the author about his own story and his small business. Telling other people's stories by outsiders is never the same as living through the stories.
3) The book may appear negative, but is NOT. As a China business consultant and a former China operations manager, I can tell you that everything in the book is true. I want to add that the author actually cares about China.
4) Any foreigner will benefit enormously by reading book!

From sandwiches to nuclear power plants, Goodman’s in-the-trenches China experiences cover an unusually broad range and the advice he offers you comes unvarnished, unleavened, and unadulterated, just like he lived it.
Anyone contemplating an adventure in the world of China business will learn an awful lot from him.

Although it was not originally on my syllabus for my Doing Business in China class, once I read Sam Goodman’s book, Where East Eats West, I immediately assigned it to my students, and sent copies to my Deans to read. This book is a must for those who are interested in doing business in China. Although I’ve been going to China for 20 years and have read numerous articles and books about China, I learned a lot from Goodman’s book—a lot of knowledge fell into place as I was reading the stories of his experiences in setting up his businesses and sharing his insights. Goodman is refreshingly honest and straightforward about his experiences and perceptions and puts them in context. His is an easy read, but chock full of applicable wisdom. It’s one of best books you can add to your China books library and worth much more than it costs. I highly recommend it.
